THE BRIEF

We were appointed by Civil Society Media to undertake an office refurbishment at their premises in Clapham, South London.

The project had a dual objective: to modernise and reconfigure the space to better support the team’s working needs, while also improving the building’s environmental performance in line with upcoming regulatory standards.

We’re proud to have delivered a transformed workspace that not only enhances functionality and comfort but also elevates the building’s EPC rating from E to B. This means it now fully complies with the 2030 Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).

OFFICE REDESIGN

The ground floor underwent a comprehensive redesign to create a more open, collaborative environment. New bench desking was installed to accommodate 20 people, complete with integrated storage at the end of each desk run to maximise space efficiency.

Two private meeting rooms, one for six people and another for five, alongside an informal eight-person open meeting area, give staff a variety of spaces to collaborate and focus.

Enhancements were also made to the existing DDA-compliant WC and shower facilities, improving both accessibility and usability for all employees.

OFFICE IMPROVEMENTS

One of the key contributions to the improved EPC rating was the installation of new LED lighting throughout the ground and first floors. These energy-efficient upgrades significantly reduced power consumption while providing a brighter, more comfortable working environment.

We also refreshed all flooring on the ground level, laying new carpet tiles across the main workspace and installing hard-wearing vinyl in the reception and lobby to give a clean, professional first impression.

Above the ground floor, the mezzanine area was reimagined as a flexible, quiet space ideal for reading, thinking and informal collaboration. A soft-seating library area was retained and refreshed, while the space was re-zoned using well-placed storage units. A high table with stools was also introduced to promote more dynamic, impromptu working styles.

REFRESHING THE SPACE

On the first floor, further energy savings were achieved with the continuation of new LED lighting throughout. We decorated the WC areas to bring them in line with the refreshed aesthetic of the building, and replaced worn flooring with new carpet and vinyl to ensure consistency and durability, particularly in the teapoint and circulation areas.

Externally, we improved accessibility by forming a new concrete ramp at the entrance, ensuring step-free access into the building. We also installed a new six-foot-high perimeter fence, improving security and clearly defining the site’s boundaries.

THE FINAL RESULT

This project delivered a contemporary, functional workspace tailored to Civil Society Media’s operational needs whilst also futureproofing the property.

By improving the building’s EPC from an E to a B, Civil Society Media is now ahead of the curve in meeting government sustainability requirements, reducing long-term energy costs, and demonstrating clear environmental responsibility. The result is a workspace that performs better, feels better, and is built to last.
